FAQ

How does hair restoration work?

There are two techniques used in hair transplant surgery: FUE (follicular unit extraction) and FUT (follicular unit transplantation). With FUT, also known as the “strip procedure”, a strip of hair-bearing scalp is surgically harvested from the back of the scalp. The hair follicles are then individually harvested under a microscope and transplanted individually. With FUE, the hair follicles are individually harvested from the scalp. FUT and FUE each have advantages and disadvantages, and one may be more appropriate for you than the other based on the extent of your hair loss, the number of grafts needed to restore your hair, and the cost of treatment.

Benefits of FUE include:

  • No horizontal scar
  • Suitable transplants requiring fewer grafts
  • You can wear your hair shorter, as scarring is not an issue

Benefits of FUT:

  • Appropriate for patients who require a large number of grafts
  • Surgery is quicker
  • The cost is generally lower

What is the most effective type of hair restoration treatment?

The most effective hair restoration treatment varies from person to person depending on the degree of hair loss, the underlying causes (such as heredity or medical conditions), and the results you hope to achieve. Dr. Leong will give you a full evaluation and will recommend the most suitable treatment plan for your unique case.

Which non-surgical hair restoration methods are available?

We offer a range of non-surgical alternatives to hair transplantation surgery. Our options include low-level laser therapy and PRP (platelet-rich plasma) hair restoration. In milder cases of hair loss, these treatments can be effective on their own. In other cases, they yield the best results in combination with hair restoration surgery or prescription treatment.

Does hair transplantation surgery hurt?

In most cases, discomfort is minimal. Local anesthetics and mild sedatives are administered to minimize any discomfort and make the procedure as comfortable as possible.

Are hair transplantation results permanent?

Results of hair restoration surgery typically last a lifetime, and your transplanted hair will continue to grow going forward. However, hair transplantation surgery does not resolve the reasons behind your hair loss — so if you continue to lose hair due to heredity, you may wish to consider another hair restoration surgery at some point later in your life.

How soon will I see results?

Your transplanted hair follicles will take some time to begin producing new hair after your hair transplant surgery. Usually, new hair will start to grow after about three or four months, with final results achieved in nine to twelve months.
